Psychiatric Services

Despite the progress we have made as a society, mental health still remains a taboo subject for a large portion of the population. Perhaps it's because the people who see problems with it do not understand just how extensive these issues can be. Mental health problems do not just include depression or anxiety; they encompass a plethora of issues that more people deal with than they realize. Psychiatric services help diagnose the most glaring issues people face and can nudge them in the right direction to help in managing these mental health issues. In many cases, they also prescribe medication that can alleviate the more extreme symptoms. However, there is a stigma against seeing these professionals. Some people misunderstand psychiatrists roles, and incorrectly assume that seeking their help is admitting something as trivial as weakness or putting themselves in the same boat as those struggling with deep mental health issues when that is not the case at all. Psychiatrists focus on diagnosing primarily, and is the first step in seeking a better life if you are struggling with your current one and do not know why. These professionals can help those with something as common as ADHD diagnosis or more serious issues like PTSD or depression. Accepting their help can therefore be the first step into improving not just your life, but everyone within in as well.

There is a demographic that is more prone to mental health issues, and do not have the same access to help. Those in correctional facilities are already isolated from the rest of society, and the environment within is not the greatest for fostering a healthy lifestyle. Mental health issues, especially anxiety and depression, typically thrive in correctional facilities. This, combined with overall stress and poor living conditions, can make anyone rapidly approach their breaking point, especially when mental health issues in standard society can feel isolating. Giving access to psychiatric help can limit this spiral into helplessness and find out what exactly is plaguing their mental health, thereby opening the door towards therapy or medication if needed.

Psychiatric services undoubtedly help the individual, but the impact it has on the community cannot be understated. In a correctional facility, everyone is already on edge. Leaving these people to the sufferings of their own mind without anyone to talk to is dangerous. Suicide, high aggression, and emerging conditions of chronic conditions like schizophrenia or bipolar disorder endanger everyone, especially in an environment without a proper outlet. Fights, abuse, and bullying can all increase, endangering the guards and bystanders alike. Unfortunately, these mental health issues are here to stay, and although they can get better it requires work from both external and from within. However, leaving those obviously struggling undiagnosed significantly increases the risk of bodily harm to themselves and others. Psychiatric services are a way to mitigate these dangers and diagnose the problem early so individuals have healthy ways to deal with them and so they do not feel alone.
